Meaning and symbolism
Documented symbolism
Article 166 of the 1991 Constitution and State Gazette No. 47/1998 define the colors: white stands for peace and freedom, green for agriculture and rich forests, and red for the blood shed by patriots.
The green band replaced the traditional Pan-Slavic blue band to emphasize Bulgaria's agricultural land and the lush Balkan mountains that sheltered freedom fighters.
Common interpretations
A popular mnemonic associates white with the sky and spirit, green with the fertile lowlands and Balkan peaks, and red with the blood of martyrs.
History and design evolution
The national flag of Bulgaria features a horizontal tricolor of white, green, and red that was born out of the 19th-century Bulgarian National Revival (Vazrazhdane) and the struggle for liberation from Ottoman rule. Historically, Bulgarian rebel leaders and armed bands (cheti) carried green silk banners bearing golden heraldic lions, often inscribed with the revolutionary motto 'Liberty or Death' (Svoboda ili smart).
While the pan-Slavic colors adopted at the Prague Slavic Congress in 1848 were white, blue, and red (as seen in the Russian and Serbian flags), Bulgarian revolutionaries deliberately replaced the traditional Slavic blue stripe with green. This change honored the forested Balkan mountains (the Stara Planina) that had sheltered Bulgarian freedom fighters (haiduks) for centuries and represented the fertile agricultural wealth of the homeland.
The horizontal arrangement was first carried in 1877 during the Russo-Turkish War by the Bulgarian Volunteer Corps (Opulchentsi). Following Bulgaria's liberation, the First Grand National Assembly convened in Veliko Tarnovo and officially codified the white-green-red tricolor in Article 23 of the historic Tarnovo Constitution on April 16, 1879. The flag remained uncharged until the Communist era (1947–1990), when a state emblem featuring a red star and wheat sheaves was placed in the hoist canton. With the fall of Communism and the ratification of the 1991 Constitution, Bulgaria returned to the clean, uncharged statutory tricolor in a 3:5 proportion.
