Red Flags

Red is the most common primary tincture on national flags, appearing on more than three-quarters of sovereign banners—from crimson sun discs and Nordic crosses to revolutionary tricolors.

Historically prized for high maritime contrast and durable cochineal/madder dyes, red is specified across statutes via Pantone (e.g., 186 C in Denmark, Monaco, and the UK), Munsell (Japan), CIE coordinates (Poland, Netherlands), or cable numbers (United States).
